Finding the right healer is a process. It can feel like an intimidating and overwhelming task given the unlimited amounts of healers, coaches, seminars… the options are endless. The level of involvement may be greater than you first expected, but at the same time, it is within your reach.
Your emotional health is too important to leave at the hands of just anyone. The vulnerability in the need to entrust some stranger with your most inner Self can be a scary process.
The question becomes, how do you find the right healer, therapist, or platform to support you in your challenges and breakthroughs?
There are a few considerations that can, maybe, ease the process a bit.
First thing you need to know is, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. There are countless other people out there that are going through the same process as you. Typically, what happens is that when someone is looking for guidance or help, they are in a vulnerable place, and perhaps, sometimes, desperate and blinded as to who can realistically support them.
They turn to family, friends, sometimes, even coworkers, to help them find someone. And this can work for you, but it might also work against you. Because the second thing you need to know is YOU ARE UNIQUE. Everyone is unique. Everyone’s energy, situation, karma, and destiny. All of it, unique. This means, what works for your cousin, your friend, or your colleague won’t necessarily work for you, because this is not a “one size fits all” kind of solution.
Also, the thing with family and friends that you have to be aware of is that they are not very objective. But we know they mean well. (See article on how to create a Support System here)
You need to focus on YOU. You are the only one who knows what you need and what works best for you. You are the person with the most to gain or lose. You are your own advocate. And, as we said before, YOU ARE UNIQUE. That means, you have to think about what you want out of this healing. What are your struggles? What sort of support do you need? What should the healer know about you to help you get there? What should they be aligned with to work with you?
This is someone who will be intimately close to you, to your inner Self. Thus, it is important to be comfortable and open with your healer. If you don’t feel totally at ease and the trust isn’t there, the healing won’t happen.
Similarly, you can be working with a great healer you resonate with, but if your main concerns aren’t being addressed, the healing also won’t happen.
That being said, the best thing you can do is try and see how you feel about the healer and the session. Remember, both have to be a hit. The healer may be a great person, and a great healer, and not be a great healer FOR YOU.
Now, here is an important part of the process.
Understand that, first and foremost, HEALING COMES FROM WITHIN. You can’t expect to go to any healer and ask them to heal you if you are not willing to put in some work in healing yourself. Also, HEALING TAKES TIME. Same as with your physical health, emotional health takes time to heal, so be patient. It also takes work. Emotions are deep and tend to be laced and connected to one another, and the journey to healing can be sort of like peeling an onion. There is always another layer to reveal, to uncover, to peel. It’s a time-consuming process in which you are able to take the necessary time to allow the layers to slowly peel back in order to let the hidden parts emerge, until really getting to the core issue.
So, based on my own experience, here are some major things to consider when seeking healers:
AUTHENTICITY
If healing is to take place - healing comes from a very scared and pure place (the heart). So, make sure your healer has the Emotional Intelligence to guide you in this process. And remember, ultimately, you are your own healer.
There are many people out there who proclaim themselves to be healers, because they pay for courses, certifications, and say they went to Bali and India. Here is the thing, the authentic healers don’t boast as they are focused on you and your process. I’m at a point in my life where I can identify who is an authentic healer and doing this work from their heart, not for the money or for the wrong reasons, so I can help you.
It is important to state that the mark of a true healer isn’t on a piece of paper or on their travel destinations. It’s on whether their Emotional Intelligence and their Spiritual Journey is at a higher place than yours. How can they heal you when they haven’t healed themselves?
SESSION FEES
More expensive doesn’t mean better. Again, a true healer doesn’t do this for the money. However, keeping that in mind, at the same time, they should be compensated accordingly. Their first priority is to heal. They shouldn’t be charging higher fees than surgeons. Years ago, I paid someone $500 an hour because, at that time, I was in a dark and vulnerable place. I am embarrassed to say, that was an expensive lesson, because the sessions didn’t help (they were a total waste). The person that really ended up helping me charged much less. Unfortunately, it is common to believe that the more we pay, the greater impact or the better we will feel.
Healing is a frightening enough process, when you are not paying for it. Having to pay is just added stress.
It is important to understand that money is energy. Financial transactions require an exchange of energy, and you don’t want that disrupted by paying too much and getting ripped off, or not paying enough for the exceptional service rendered to you. The exchange needs to be aligned and mutually beneficial, because both parties are participating as equals.
HEART-COHERENCE (Being Engaged/Present)
As I see it, the most important qualities in a healer are empathy, commitment, that he is present, and totally engaged with the process. The best healers and coaches I have worked with are just that. They take notes, ask questions, and guide you through your process. Most importantly, they are flexible, knowing where to push and where not to, being sensitive to your needs. I have also worked with healers and coaches who are rigid and follow their own protocol, whether it may be suited to your needs or not, just because that’s what they are certified in, or paid certification for. They work on the premise that one size fits all.
Healing doesn’t work that way. The healer you work with needs to take you through the process, subtly, without pressuring or pushing. What I usually do is, I ask healers if they take notes in our sessions and how I can refer back to them, because there are major footprints and shifts in our process. The best and major breakthroughs I had were the ones where there were notes and recordings as reference. As dismal as it is to listen to your own voice in a healing session, it is extraordinarily profound and catapults you into a major shift.
In conclusion, always remember that, at the end of the day, you are your own healer and you have to take responsibility for that. The healer helping you is just a catalyst to guide you through the process. Many times, during a healing process, shifts happen because the healer has the awareness and wherewithal to expose something that was a blind spot to you.
That’s what healers are there for. To help you heal yourself, guiding you, supporting you, showing you your options, your hidden issues, seeing YOU, relating to YOU. They aren’t there to judge you, to take advantage of you, to bankrupt you, or to lump you as just another patient. They should help you grow, help you have a good release or cathartic moment. That way, you feel more energized, willing to tackle life with a whole new disposition. A great healer has the power to really set you free.
You deserve your healer to be someone who really truly gets YOU. Finding that healer might take a while, but don’t give up. It is better to wait a little while longer and get it right than settle for less.
